Thalamus: Anatomy

The thalamus is the central part of cerebrum. The thalamus projects its axons to the cortex of cerebrum and cerebellum.

The Figure 1 shows anterior, ventral, lateral, dorsal, pulvinar nuclei in the thalamus. The posterior section, pulvinar sends its projections to visual cortex.

The figure below shows the simplified structure of the thalamus. The dorsal nuclei is separated by interlaminar nuclei (IL) from other part of the thalamus. The ventral nuclei is further divided into anterior (VA), lateral (VL), posterior lateral (VPL), posterior medial nuclei (VPM). The lateral nuclei consists of dorsal (LD) and posterior (LP) nuclei.
